Amazon Workshop Itinerary

July 5–14, 2011

July 5 – Raleigh / Lima

  • Group members depart for Lima, Peru.
  • Met on arrival at the Lima airport. Transfer to hotel.

July 6 – Lima / Iquitos

  • Transfer to Lima Airport.
  • Depart on flight Lima/Iquitos.
  • Open-air bus to boat dock. Visit the Iquitos Market enroute.
  • Board the Amazon Queen for trip on the Amazon River to Explorama Lodge.
  • Conversation with Amazon Physician Dr. Linnea Smith after dinner.

July 7 – Explorama Lodge

  • Optional birding by boat or walking each morning.
  • Culture & Craft Fair.
  • “Rainforest Cultures” – Local Guide.
  • Trading with the Yagua.
  • Clinic Visit.
  • Optional night walk or boat outing each night.

July 8 – Explorama Lodge / Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies

  • Board boat for ACTS Research Station, Sugar Cane Factory enroute.
  • Rainforest Canopy Studies with Dr. Meg Lowman and Dr. Phil Wittman.
  • Night hike to view the bioluminescent fungus patch.

July 9 – Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies

  • Visit the Canopy Walkway at dawn.
  • Rainforest Canopy Studies with Dr. Meg Lowman & Dr. Phil Wittman.
  • Overnight Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies (ACTS).

July 10 – Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies / ExplorNapo Lodge

  • Rainforest Canopy Studies with Dr. Meg Lowman & Dr. Phil Wittman.
  • Visit ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden with Shaman Guillermo Rodriguez.

July 11 – ExplorNapo Lodge

  • Service Project in a Local Village with Marcos Oversluijs or Canopy Studies with Dr. Meg Lowman.

July 12 – ExplorNapo Lodge / Ceiba Tops Resort

  • Black Water Lake Excursion
  • Lunch at ExplorNapo.
  • Transfer to Ceiba Tops. Amazon Library, Dolphin enroute.
  • Wrap-Up Activities & Closing Ceremony.

July 13 – Ceiba Tops Resort / Iquitos / Lima Airport / U.S.A.

  • Walk to the Giant Ceiba Tree
  • Visit Monkey Island by boat.
  • Lunch at Ceiba Tops.
  • Departure by boat from Ceiba Tops.
  • Transfer to Iquitos airport for flight Iquitos/Lima.
  • Return to the U.S. on an overnight flight arriving home on July 14.
