iLabs: FINALLY! The Bioluminescent Plankton Exhibit is UP!!

June 27, 2014

Well, after a crazy Winter and Summer in the Micro World iLab (more on that in the next post), we are finally getting around to share with you some of what’s been happening, and it’s a LOT!!!

To start off the blog posting resurrection for the Micro World iLab:

A LONG-overdue update on our lab’s bioluminescence exhibit, with living Pyrocystis plankton……thanks to one of our lab staff members:  Nancy Locquet!  Yes we have some great staff members creating wonderful things in our lab and Nancy is one of them!

So stay tuned because Nancy will be giving us regular updates on the Pyrocystis for this blog, and some of our other staff members may be sharing their room projects soon, too!

Thanks Nancy! 🙂

Some of you might remember the blog posted by Deb Bailey on July 15th 2012 where she mentioned Pyrocystis cells flashing away in a “night box”.

Well… we are happy to report that this exhibit is now fully operational and can be seen by any visitor who wants to be blown away by this spectacular phenomenon!

Pyrocystis setup 6 25 14

A push on a big white button activates a stirring device which draws a plastic disk through the water, creating a shear to which these bioluminescent algae respond with bright blue flashes. These flashes appear on a black TV screen like magic. Truly fascinating to see how these organisms adapt so well to a reversed biorhythm (circadian rhythm).
