iLabs: Sounds of Science – Gel Electrophoresis: Part II

October 25, 2012

Just to give you a flavor of our classes as well as a glimpse of the work the students do in the lab, here is a 1o minute video – snippets of our 2 hour gel electrophoresis class. The students start by practicing pipetting, move on to load their gels and run them in the chambers. While that is taking place they do a DNA extraction activity using wheat germ. After staining their gels, they perform another activity using Lego pieces, to explore how DNA breaks apart into different sized fragments that then move at different speeds across the agarose gels.  By that point, it is time to read their gels and conclude the class.
