iLabs: We Interrupt Snails for a News Flash on Vinegar Eels

July 22, 2012

Just a very brief Micro World update. We will be continuing our “week of snail embryo progress” over the next few days (and there’s new questions added to our list).

But a momentary break to update all on the Vinegar Eel Project! This is the project where we wanted to find out if and when vinegar eels might show up in our bottles of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Everyone (ourselves included) wondered if the vinegar eels would hatch in our bottles from the store, and if they did, how long would it take.

I purchased the bottles on June 11th 2012 and have been monitoring them ever since.  I kept some in the dark and some in the light.

Yesterday, one of the bottle samples came up POSITIVE!!!!

I even resampled the bottle and looked at another slide on the microscope and found even more the second time.  This bottle was in the dark. The same vinegar in the light has not shown any of the worms yet.

Somewhere between the last update and today, they hatched!!  Now the one variable I can’t know is how long the bottles of vinegar were on the shelf at the store. The only thing I can say is that it has been 41 days since I bought the vinegar, and in that time, a bottle has gone positive.

I will keep you posted on further developments, and in the meantime, stay tuned for answers to snail embryo questions. They’ll be coming up next!
