In the Amazon!

Lima, Peru, in the rain

Lima, Peru, in the rain

We got up this morning to the drizzle that permeated Lima, and headed back to the airport for our flight to Iquitos. After clearing security and taking a small shuttle out to the plane, we took to the skies. The view of the Andes’ snow-capped mountains was incredible.

Frank and Oxygen masks

Frank and the re-deployed oxygen masks

We landed for a short stopover in Tarapoto where we all experienced a first — the oxygen masks deployed while we were sitting on the tarmac! After several minutes of confusion mechanics came on board and re-set all of the masks.

We took off for Iquitos and were at cruising altitude when the masks deployed again. Having watched this once before no one even flinched, and the mechanic came back through and reset them again!

We landed in Iquitos and boarded a bus to head to an open-air market. The sounds, sights and smells were almost overwhelming. You could find anything from spices to fresh raw chicken, from baskets to herbal remedies. We enjoying learning from our guides and buying some items.

Carolyn and Dan on the Amazon Queen

Enjoying a break on the Amazon Queen

Then it was on to the Amazon Queen, a lovely triple-decker boat that took us on a slow journey along the Amazon River. We were amazed by the expanse of water; the incredible trees were dwarfed by the enormity of the river. From the top deck of the boat we watched a beautiful sunset. When arrived at the Explorama dock, we boarded smaller boats to journey up a tributary to our lodge. Upon our arrival at the lodge, we enjoyed a delicious dinner with heart-of-palm, caramel flan, and fish and rice. More tomorrow if the wireless holds out!
